STARBECK IN BLOOM

Starbeck in Bloom, National Winner for Urban Category in Britain in Bloom 2006, National Silver Gilt Winner for 2008.

Starbeck in Bloom was formed thirteen years ago after a depressing spate of vandalism in the High Street. Morale was at an all-time low and a small group of people and businesses decided to brighten the shops by putting some flowering tubs on the street and organising a garden competition.

From that small act we grew and grew, eventually we entered Yorkshire in Bloom in the Urban Category in 1998. Our success was amazing, we took joint first in 2000, overall first in 01 and 2002, Summer Winner in 2003 our first Spring 20 win in 2005 and also Summer overall and most improved for that year, then Gold in 2007 and again in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Our committee is very small but we call on help from all sectors of the community and never get a refusal! Brownies, Guides, Brigades, Scouts, WI Church groups and schools all play their part. Donations of money came from local people, businesses and the community fund and we receive unstinting help from Harrogate Borough Council.

Mystery of the Boxes is Revealed

Many people have asked over the last couple of weeks what the boxes at the drought beds are, many suggestions have been made but on Saturday as part of the refurbishment of the beds the boxes were filled with various material to make homes  for bugs. The beds have been redesigned to incorporate nectar rich plants to encourage wildlife and will provide flowers from early spring into late autumn. The insect hotels will offer a home for beetles, woodlice and other creepy crawlies. The renovations have been paid by the Harrogate Borough Council’s  Commuted Sums policy where by new housing developments have to contribute to existing services.

Spring Fair
We launched the new Nature Detective Trail with the Deputy Mayor and children searching around Belmont Field for the clues .It proved to be great fun and was ably led by Leah and Jennifer two Scouts preparing for their Community badge. The trail leaflets are available free of charge at the library for anyone to have a go and shortly there will be a board up in Addymans Wood with the details too. There was a superb Cake stall and a plant stall as well as Tidy gardens with a stall and activities for the children. They were helped by Pirate Captain Rummage to make butterflies and bees to decorate the new Insect hotels. With the help of our MP Andrew Jones the Hotels were officially opened to insects by Charlie Amos -now you will all know what those two boxes on the field are for! Andrew also planted a Jubilee tree for Starbeck in Addymans Wood -it is a Crab apple that will give more food for the insects and birds. Wild flower seeds were scattered along the edge of the playing area by several children. It was good to have a coffee and scone after all that activity and we are very grateful for the support given by the Library for this event.

SPRING JUDGING

This was on the last day of sunshine and Starbeck looked glorious! The petrol queues at Morrisons did mean that the two Yorkshire in Bloom judges were delayed arriving at Taylors but from then on the day went well. What a difference it makes to the daffodils when the sun shines on them! Thank you to all who helped make Starbeck look so good ,the HBC lads who were out in force, the many Starbeck in Bloom volunteers, all who met the judges and made them welcome and all the dogwalkers who gathered up the litter and all who tidyed in front of their homes. It is great to see everyone pulling together. The summer judging is early July and the results arent known until September-but meanwhile we who live here can enjoy the flowers and the clean streets!
